Europe's Largest Landscape Zoo

Historic Eastern Berlin Institution Tierpark Berlin, established in 1955 in East Berlin, represents Europe's largest landscape zoo spread across 160 hectares of magnificent parkland surrounding the historic Friedrichsfelde Palace. Built during the Cold War as East Berlin's answer to West Berlin's Zoo, it has evolved into one of Europe's most important zoological institutions.

Landscape Zoo Concept Unlike traditional compact zoos, Tierpark Berlin pioneered the landscape zoo concept with spacious, naturalistic enclosures that prioritize animal welfare and visitor experience. The vast parkland, originally designed by renowned landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné, provides animals with extensive territories while offering visitors a park-like experience.

Conservation Leadership As a member of EAZA and participant in over 120 breeding programs, Tierpark Berlin maintains international studbooks for endangered deer species and Asian wild asses. The zoo's successful elephant breeding program has gained international recognition, while its diverse collection includes Europe's most comprehensive ungulate collection.

Historic Palace Setting The baroque Friedrichsfelde Palace (1695) serves as the zoo's centerpiece, creating a unique combination of wildlife conservation and cultural heritage. The palace, designed by Benjamin Raule and later enhanced by Peter Joseph Lenné's landscape designs, provides visitors with both zoological and architectural experiences.

Modern Facilities The redesigned Alfred Brehm House (Rainforest House) showcases Southeast Asian wildlife in immersive tropical environments, while the polar bear exhibit features daily educational talks. The zoo's commitment to education and conservation continues the legacy of founding director Heinrich Dathe.
