Slovakia's largest zoo, covering 96 hectares of forested Bratislava hills with 2,500+ animals including gorillas and Carpathian wildlife.
Slovakia's National Zoo
Bratislava Zoo (Zoologická záhrada Bratislava) is the largest and most important zoo in Slovakia, located in the Mlynská dolina valley in the wooded hills of Bratislava, the Slovak capital. Founded in 1960, the zoo covers 96 hectares across a naturally hilly, forested terrain — one of the largest zoo areas relative to city size in Central Europe.
Hillside Forest Setting
The zoo's extraordinary setting in the forested valleys of the Bratislava hills gives it an unusually wild, natural character. The hilly topography means animal enclosures are embedded in genuine woodland, and the steep paths between exhibits give the visit a sense of exploration and discovery rarely found in flat urban zoos.
Animal Collection
Bratislava Zoo houses approximately 2,500 animals across 450+ species:
- Gorillas — western lowland gorillas in a major indoor-outdoor habitat
- African savannah — giraffes, zebras, and ostriches in spacious paddocks
- Big cats — tigers, lions, leopards, and snow leopards
- Hippos — common hippos in an aquatic habitat
- Elephants — Asian elephants with indoor and outdoor space
- Primates — chimpanzees, orangutans, and over 15 primate species
- Reptile pavillon — a large, modern reptile house with Komodo dragons, anacondas, and crocodilians
- Carpathian fauna — brown bears, wolves, lynx, and European bison in naturalistic enclosures
Slovakia's Wildlife Connection
Slovakia sits within the heart of the Carpathian mountains and has one of the most intact large mammal communities in Europe. The zoo's Carpathian section, featuring brown bears, wolves, and lynx, connects the urban zoo experience to Slovakia's remarkable wild heritage.
