The World's Greatest Giant Panda Experience
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world's most important giant panda conservation facility and the single best place on Earth to see giant pandas in a naturalistic setting. Located just 10 kilometres north of Chengdu, Sichuan — the heart of panda country — it is home to the world's largest captive giant panda population and conducts internationally recognised research that has transformed panda conservation globally.
🐼 The Panda Experience
Giant Pandas:
- Over 200 giant pandas — the world's largest captive population
- Multiple enclosures across the 92-hectare site allow observation at various life stages: adults, sub-adults, juveniles, and cubs
- Sunshine Nursery – Where newborn cubs are raised; during breeding season visitors can observe tiny pink cubs through glass
Red Pandas:
- A significant red panda population alongside the giant pandas
- Red pandas roam freely in tree-filled enclosures and are often active and visible
🌿 Naturalistic Setting
The base is set in a beautifully landscaped bamboo forest, carefully designed to replicate the pandas' natural Sichuan habitat. The combination of mist, bamboo, and lush greenery makes it one of the most atmospheric wildlife destinations in Asia.
🔬 Research & Conservation Mission
The base has been instrumental in reversing the decline of giant pandas — working closely with the Chinese government, WWF, and international zoos. Its breeding programme has enabled the successful reintroduction of several pandas to the wild, and it provides giant pandas to zoos worldwide under China's famous panda diplomacy programme.
