The World's Most Successful Elephant Orphanage
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) runs the world's most successful elephant orphan rescue and rehabilitation programme, located at the Nairobi National Park headquarters. Founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick following the death of her husband David — warden of Tsavo East National Park — the Trust has hand-raised and successfully released over 260 elephant orphans back into the wild.
🐘 The Elephant Orphan Experience
Each morning from 11:00am to 12:00pm, visitors are invited to watch and interact with the current cohort of baby elephant orphans during their daily milk feeding and mud bath session. This is one of Kenya's most beloved and emotionally resonant wildlife experiences.
- Baby elephants of various ages engage playfully with visitors and keepers
- Knowledgeable keepers explain each elephant's background, rescue story, and personality
- The mud bath is a highlight — young elephants tumble and play exuberantly in the red mud
- Visitors can observe the elephants drinking from their giant milk bottles
🦏 Rhino Rehabilitation
The Trust also rehabilitates orphaned black rhinos with the goal of reintroduction to protected areas across Kenya.
🌍 Conservation Impact
The DSWT is internationally recognised as the world's leading authority on elephant rescue and raising. Its methodology — developed by Dame Daphne through decades of trial and research — is now the gold standard for elephant orphan care globally. The Trust also runs anti-poaching teams across Tsavo and multiple other conservation programmes.
