Guatemala's most modern zoo and natural history complex, combining a zoo, aquarium, botanical gardens, and science centre.
Guatemala City's Modern Eco-Zoo
Mundo Petapa is Guatemala City's most modern zoological and natural history attraction, located in the Villa Nueva municipality on the southern edge of the metropolitan area. Opened in 1997 as a forward-thinking alternative to the older Zoo La Aurora, Mundo Petapa combines wildlife exhibits with an aquarium, natural history museum, and botanical gardens in a single large complex.
A Multi-Attraction Complex
What sets Mundo Petapa apart from other Central American zoos is its breadth — it functions not as a single zoo but as an integrated complex of complementary attractions:
- Zoo – housing native Guatemalan and international wildlife
- Aquarium – freshwater and marine species from Guatemala and beyond
- Natural History Museum – geological, paleontological, and biological exhibits focused on Guatemala
- Botanical Gardens – an extensive collection of native Guatemalan plants
- Children's Science Centre – interactive educational exhibits for younger visitors
Animal Collection
The zoo section focuses on species representative of Guatemala's remarkable biodiversity:
- Jaguars and pumas – Guatemala's apex predators
- Quetzals – the resplendent quetzal, Guatemala's national bird and one of the most beautiful birds in the world
- Spider monkeys and howler monkeys
- Tapirs – the largest land mammal in Central America
- Crocodiles and iguanas
- Scarlet macaws and toucans
Focus on Conservation Education
Mundo Petapa was designed from the outset with education as its primary mission. It works closely with Guatemalan schools and universities, and its natural history and science exhibits make it one of the most educationally rich attractions in the country.
Location
Mundo Petapa is located in Zone 13 / Villa Nueva, accessible from Guatemala City by car. Its location on the southern periphery of the capital means it is often combined with visits to the nearby international airport area.
