Iran's largest zoo, located within the vast Chitgar Forest Park in western Tehran. Home to Persian leopards and part of Asiatic cheetah conservation awareness.

Iran's Capital City Zoo

Tehran Zoo (باغ وحش تهران) is the largest and most important zoological institution in Iran, located in the Chitgar district of western Tehran, within the vast Chitgar Forest Park — one of the largest urban parks in the world. Founded in 1961, the zoo has undergone significant expansion and modernisation over the decades, and today forms part of a large leisure complex serving Iran's enormous capital of 15 million people.

Chitgar Forest Park Setting

The zoo is embedded within Chitgar Forest Park — a vast planted forest covering over 2,000 hectares on the western edge of Tehran, created in the 1960s as a green lung for the rapidly growing city. The forested setting gives the zoo a pleasant, park-like atmosphere, and the proximity to the Chitgar Lake recreation area makes a zoo visit part of a broader leisure outing for Tehran families.

Animal Collection

The zoo houses a broad range of species from Iran, Asia, Africa, and internationally:

  • Persian leopards — one of Iran's most iconic and endangered native species; the zoo has been involved in breeding and conservation
  • Asiatic cheetahs — among the rarest animals in the world, with fewer than 50 individuals remaining in Iran; the zoo has participated in awareness and conservation efforts
  • Caspian bears — brown bears from Iran's northern Alborz mountains
  • Persian fallow deer — a critically endangered deer species endemic to Iran
  • Lions, tigers, and jaguars — international big cats
  • Giraffes, hippos, and zebras
  • Primates — chimpanzees and various other species
  • Persian birds — including flamingos from Iran's salt lakes and various birds of prey

Iran's Extraordinary Wildlife Heritage

Iran is a country of remarkable biodiversity, sitting at the crossroads of Central Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean ecosystems. The Persian leopard, Asiatic cheetah, Persian fallow deer, and Caspian seal are among the world's most endangered animals — all native to Iran. Tehran Zoo serves an important role in raising awareness of this threatened natural heritage among the Iranian public.

Iran's Historic Royal Garden Zoo

Eram Garden (باغ ارم) is one of Iran's most celebrated historic gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in Shiraz — the city of poets, roses, and Persian culture in Fars Province. While primarily famous as a Persian royal garden of extraordinary beauty, Eram Garden also contains a significant zoological section that makes it a dual attraction of historic and wildlife interest.

UNESCO World Heritage Persian Garden

Eram Garden is one of nine Persian Gardens collectively inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, recognised as outstanding examples of Persian garden design — a tradition that influenced garden cultures from Spain to India. The garden dates back to the Seljuk era (11th–12th centuries) and was developed to its current form during the Qajar dynasty (19th century). Its elegant pavilion, towering cypress trees, and formal water channels represent the pinnacle of Persian horticultural art.

The Zoo Section

Within the extensive garden grounds, a zoological section houses a collection of animals that complement the garden's role as a place of natural beauty and education:

  • Persian leopards — native to Iran's Zagros and Alborz mountains
  • Deer and gazelles — animals historically associated with Persian royal gardens
  • Peacocks — a quintessential garden bird deeply embedded in Persian iconography
  • Birds of prey — eagles and falcons, important in Persian falconry tradition
  • Various bird species — waterfowl and songbirds in the garden's pond and aviary areas

Shiraz — City of Poets and Roses

Shiraz is one of Iran's most culturally rich cities, home to the tombs of the great Persian poets Hafez and Saadi, the nearby ruins of Persepolis, and the famous rose gardens that inspire its designation as the city of roses. Eram Garden is the centrepiece of Shiraz's horticultural heritage and one of the most visited sites in Iran.
