Venezuela's Second City Zoo
Parque Zoológico Las Delicias is the principal zoo of Maracay, the capital of Aragua state and one of Venezuela's most important cities. Located within the historic Parque Las Delicias — a grand civic park laid out in the early 20th century during the presidency of Juan Vicente Gómez — the zoo is set in one of Venezuela's most beautiful urban green spaces.
Historic Setting
The park in which the zoo is embedded was designed in the 1920s as a showpiece of Venezuelan civic architecture, featuring formal gardens, fountains, and grand tree-lined avenues. The zoo occupies a section of this historic park and shares its elegant, historic character. The surrounding grounds contain some of the finest mature tropical trees in any Venezuelan city.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses a representative collection of Venezuelan and international wildlife:
- Jaguars and pumas — Venezuela's native big cats
- Tapirs and giant anteaters
- Capybaras — abundant naturally in the nearby Aragua valley wetlands
- Spectacled caimans — common in Venezuelan rivers and lakes
- Deer and peccaries — mammals of the Venezuelan savannah
- Parrots, macaws, and toucans — vibrant birds of the Venezuelan tropics
- Lions and tigers — international species popular with visitors
Maracay's Green Heart
Las Delicias is one of the most cherished public spaces in Maracay — a city known for its pleasant climate and green character. The combination of zoo, botanical plantings, and formal gardens makes it a destination for families from across Aragua state, and the park remains a point of civic pride for Maracaíños.
