Originally established in 1909 at the royal Changgyeonggung Palace by the Japanese colonial government, it was rebuilt and reopened in its current spectacular setting in 1984. It is the only Korean zoo certified by both ISIS and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
