Most visited wildlife attraction in Belize, internationally recognised as one of the best small zoos in the world.
Central America's Most Celebrated Wildlife Sanctuary
The Belize Zoo is widely regarded as one of the finest small zoos in the world and the most beloved wildlife attraction in Belize. Located along the Western Highway, approximately 47 kilometres west of Belize City, the zoo was founded in 1983 by wildlife educator Sharon Matola.
Remarkable Origins
The zoo came into existence in an unusual way — it grew out of a wildlife film production. When a documentary crew left behind their animal cast, Sharon Matola chose to care for the animals rather than release them, as they had become habituated to humans. What began as a makeshift sanctuary evolved into a world-class educational zoo.
Exclusively Belizean Wildlife
What sets The Belize Zoo apart from virtually every other zoo is its unique focus: it houses only animals native to Belize. There are no imported exotic species. Every animal at the zoo is a Belizean native, giving visitors an authentic window into the country's remarkable biodiversity.
Notable residents include:
- Tapirs – the national animal of Belize, also known locally as the mountain cow
- Jaguars – Belize is home to the highest jaguar density in the world
- Harpy eagles – one of the world's largest and most powerful eagles
- Scarlet macaws – brilliantly coloured national birds
- Crocodiles – both Morelet's and American crocodile species
- Howler monkeys, spider monkeys, ocelots, pumas, and peccaries
Education & Conservation
The Belize Zoo operates the Tropical Education Centre (TEC) adjacent to the zoo grounds, offering overnight stays, field research, and environmental education programmes. The zoo is a registered non-profit organisation and relies heavily on donations and visitor fees to fund its conservation work.
A Must-Visit Attraction
For anyone visiting Belize, the zoo is considered an essential stop — whether travelling from Belize City toward San Ignacio or the Cayo District. The experience is intimate and immersive, a world away from the large zoological gardens of major cities.
