Colombia's most unique attraction — Pablo Escobar's former estate, now a theme park and wildlife reserve famous for its wild hippo population in the Magdalena River.
The World's Most Extraordinary Theme Park & Wildlife Reserve
Hacienda Nápoles is one of the most unique and storied attractions in all of Latin America, located near Puerto Triunfo in the Magdalena Medio region of Antioquia, Colombia, approximately 160 kilometres east of Medellín. Originally the private estate of the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, the hacienda has been transformed into a remarkable theme park, wildlife reserve, and museum that draws visitors from across Colombia and the world.
Pablo Escobar's Private Estate
At the height of his power in the 1980s, Pablo Escobar built this vast estate as his personal paradise. The hacienda featured its own airstrip, a collection of exotic cars, a bullring, sculptures, and — most famously — a private zoo stocked with animals imported illegally from Africa and other continents. Among these animals were four hippopotamuses: one male and three females. After Escobar's death in 1993, most animals were relocated but the hippos proved impossible to move.
The Famous Hippos
The hippos at Hacienda Nápoles have become one of the most extraordinary wildlife phenomena in the world. Left behind after Escobar's death, they have bred prolifically and now number over 100 individuals living wild in the Magdalena River and surrounding waterways — the only wild hippo population outside of Africa. Scientists and governments continue to debate their ecological impact and management, while tourists come specifically to see these remarkable escapees. The park includes exhibits about the hippos and boat tours to spot them in the wild.
Theme Park & Attractions
Hacienda Nápoles has been fully developed as a commercial attraction with diverse entertainment:
- Aquapark — a large water park with slides and pools
- Safari — driving routes through wildlife areas where hippos, African species, and other animals roam
- Dino Park — life-size dinosaur replicas in natural settings
- Pablo Escobar Museum — documenting the history of the estate and its infamous owner
- Escobar's original house — the preserved ruins of his residence
- Vintage car collection — original vehicles from Escobar's collection
- Escobar's private plane — the actual aircraft he used displayed on the property
A Truly Singular Experience
Nowhere else in the world can you visit a converted drug lord's estate, see wild hippos roaming a South American river, ride water slides, and tour a museum about one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals — all in the same place. Hacienda Nápoles is genuinely unlike any other attraction on Earth.
