Home of India's Purebred Asiatic Lions
Sakkarbaug Zoological Park (Junagadh Zoo) is one of India's most zoologically significant zoos, located in Junagadh in Gujarat — the gateway city to the Gir Forest, the world's last habitat of wild Asiatic lions. Founded in 1863, it is India's third oldest zoo and holds a uniquely important role as the custodian of purebred Asiatic lions — the same genetic stock as those in the nearby Gir Forest.
🦁 Asiatic Lions — The Crown Jewel
Sakkarbaug Zoo is world-famous for its Asiatic lion breeding programme, which holds the largest collection of purebred Asiatic lions in any zoo globally. The Asiatic lion is genetically and morphologically distinct from the African lion and survives in the wild only in the Gir Forest — fewer than 700 individuals remain. The zoo's breeding programme serves as an essential backup population for this critically important subspecies.
