New Zealand's Only Bird of Prey Centre
Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre is New Zealand's only dedicated raptor sanctuary and breeding centre, located near Rotorua on the shores of Lake Rotorua. Founded in 1994 by conservation legend Debbie Stewart, Wingspan is internationally recognised for its groundbreaking work breeding and releasing the endangered New Zealand falcon (kārearea) back into the wild.
🦅 Birds of Prey Collection
Native Raptors:
- New Zealand Falcon (Kārearea) – One of the world's fastest birds and New Zealand's only endemic falcon; Wingspan has bred and released over 200 individuals
- Morepork (Ruru) – New Zealand's native owl, seen in an atmospheric nocturnal setting
- Swamp Harrier – New Zealand's largest native bird of prey
Introduced Raptors:
- Little Owl – Introduced to New Zealand in the 1900s
- Barn Owl – Widespread in open farmland
🎯 Free-Flight Displays
The highlight of any visit is the spectacular daily free-flight demonstration, where trained falcons and hawks are flown at full speed across the lakeside flight area. These breathtaking displays showcase the extraordinary speed, agility, and hunting behaviour of New Zealand's raptors at close range.
🌿 Conservation Impact
Wingspan's breeding programme for the New Zealand falcon has been one of New Zealand's most successful native bird conservation stories. The centre works closely with vineyards and orchards to establish wild falcon populations as a natural pest control solution — a world-first initiative.
