Paraguay's National Zoo
Jardín Zoológico de Asunción is the national zoo of Paraguay, located in the capital city of Asunción within the Parque Carlos Antonio López, one of the city's main urban green spaces. Founded in the early 20th century, the zoo is Paraguay's oldest and most significant wildlife institution, serving as the primary centre for zoological education and conservation in the country.
Wildlife of the Gran Chaco and Pantanal
Paraguay sits at the heart of two of South America's most important and least-known ecosystems: the Gran Chaco — the vast dry forest and savannah that covers much of western Paraguay — and the southern edges of the Pantanal, the world's largest tropical wetland. The zoo reflects this extraordinary natural heritage.
Animals on display include:
- Jaguars — Paraguay's apex predator, increasingly threatened in the Chaco
- Maned wolves — the iconic long-legged canid of South America's interior
- Giant anteaters and giant armadillos — Chaco species increasingly rare in the wild
- Tapirs — the largest land mammal in South America
- Marsh deer and pampas deer — grassland species of the Paraguayan interior
- Caimans and anacondas — wetland species from the Pantanal region
- Hyacinth macaws — the world's largest macaw, found in the Paraguayan Chaco
Conservation Significance
The zoo plays an important role in raising awareness of Paraguay's threatened wildlife, particularly species of the Gran Chaco — one of the world's most biodiverse and most rapidly disappearing forests. Paraguay has lost a significant percentage of its Chaco forest in recent decades, and the zoo provides an important educational counterpoint.
Asunción's Green Space
The zoo is set within the Parque Carlos Antonio López, one of Asunción's main urban parks, making it easily accessible and often combined with a broader park outing. It remains a cherished institution for Asuncenos and a key attraction for visitors to Paraguay's compact capital.
