Uruguay's oldest and most visited zoo, a beloved Montevideo institution since 1916 with free public admission.
Montevideo's Historic City Zoo
Jardín Zoológico Villa Dolores is the main zoological garden of Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, located in the Villa Dolores neighbourhood in the western part of the city. Founded in 1916, it is the oldest zoo in Uruguay and one of the oldest in South America, operating for over a century as a beloved public institution.
A Century of History
The zoo was established in the grounds of the historic Villa Dolores estate — a 19th-century mansion and gardens that now form the heart of the zoo. The mansion building and original landscaped gardens give the zoo a gracious, historic character unlike more modern zoological facilities.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses species from Uruguay, South America, and around the world:
- Jaguars and pumas — South America's apex predators
- Maned wolves — the iconic canid of South America's cerrado and grasslands
- Giant anteaters and capybaras — native to South American wetlands
- Rheas — the large flightless bird of Uruguay's pampas grasslands
- Pampas deer and marsh deer — grassland species native to Uruguay
- African lions and tigers — international big cats popular with visitors
- Primates — spider monkeys, capuchins, and marmosets
- Birds — flamingos, macaws, toucans, and Uruguayan native birds
Free Public Admission
Villa Dolores is a free public zoo, operated by the Municipality of Montevideo. This accessibility makes it one of the most visited public spaces in the Uruguayan capital, with families, school groups, and tourists all taking advantage of the free entry throughout the year.
Combined with Parque Villa Dolores
The zoo is set within the larger Parque Villa Dolores, a popular urban park that also contains botanical gardens, a rose garden, playgrounds, and walking paths. A visit to the zoo integrates naturally with a broader afternoon in the park — a classic Montevideo family outing.
