Minas Gerais's Beloved City Zoo
Zoológico de Belo Horizonte is the most popular zoo in the state of Minas Gerais and one of the most visited in Brazil, located in the Florestal area of Belo Horizonte, Brazil's third-largest city. Founded in 1959, the zoo sits within a large green park in the western zone of the city and has been an important cultural institution for generations of Mineiros (residents of Minas Gerais).
Animal Collection
The zoo houses over 1,500 animals representing more than 200 species from Brazil and around the world:
- Lions and tigers – the zoo's most popular big cats
- Jaguars – Brazil's iconic apex predator
- Giant anteaters and maned wolves – charismatic Brazilian cerrado species
- Gorillas and chimpanzees – great apes in large landscaped habitats
- Hippos and giraffes – African species in spacious enclosures
- South American primates – spider monkeys, muriquis, and capuchins
- Reptile collection – anacondas, caimans, tortoises, and lizards
- Bird aviaries – toucans, macaws, flamingos, and a walk-through bird garden
Conservation Programmes
The zoo runs important conservation programmes for several endangered Brazilian species, including the muriqui monkey (the largest primate in the Americas), giant anteaters, and various Atlantic Forest birds. It collaborates closely with the Jardim Botânico de Belo Horizonte next door on integrated conservation and education initiatives.
Combined Visit with Botanical Garden
The zoo is located adjacent to Belo Horizonte's Botanical Garden, allowing visitors to combine both attractions in a single day out. Together, the two parks form one of the largest natural green spaces in the Brazilian city.
