Chile's national zoo, dramatically set on the slopes of Cerro San Cristóbal within the largest urban park in South America.
Santiago's Historic National Zoo
Zoológico Nacional de Chile is the national zoological garden of Chile, located in the Cerro San Cristóbal area of Santiago, within the vast Parque Metropolitano de Santiago — the largest urban park in South America. Founded in 1925, the zoo is set dramatically on the slopes of Cerro San Cristóbal, giving it one of the most spectacular urban settings of any zoo in the world.
A Zoo on a Hill
The zoo's location on the steep slopes of Cerro San Cristóbal means that a visit involves walking uphill through terraced animal habitats with ever-expanding views over Santiago. The Andes mountains, visible on clear days as a dramatic snowy backdrop beyond the city, give the zoo a setting of extraordinary natural grandeur.
Animal Collection
The zoo focuses on species from Chile, South America, and internationally:
- Andean condors — the symbol of the Andes and Chile's most iconic bird
- Pumas — Chile's native big cat, found from the Atacama to Patagonia
- Guanacos and vicuñas — wild South American camelids
- South Andean deer (huemul) — Chile's national animal, critically endangered
- African lions and tigers — international big cats
- Primates — spider monkeys, capuchins, and howler monkeys
- Polar zone — penguins and other cold-adapted species
- Chilean birds — rheas, flamingos, and endemic Andean species
Conservation of Chilean Endemic Species
The zoo plays a critical role in conservation of species found only in Chile, particularly the huemul (South Andean deer) — Chile's national animal and one of the most endangered deer species in the world. Breeding programmes for the huemul and other Chilean endemic species are among the zoo's most important contributions.
Combined with Parque Metropolitano
The zoo is just one component of the vast Parque Metropolitano, which also includes cable cars, swimming pools, botanical gardens, and scenic viewpoints. A full day on Cerro San Cristóbal can combine the zoo with cable car rides and panoramic views over the entire Santiago basin.
