Popularidad

One of the largest zoos in Latin America by land area, located in the highland forests near Toluca in the State of Mexico.

The State of Mexico's Vast Wildlife Park

Zoológico de Zacango is one of the largest zoos in Mexico and in all of Latin America by land area, located in the municipality of Calimaya in the State of Mexico, approximately 15 kilometres south of Toluca. Set across a vast forested landscape at an altitude of over 2,600 metres above sea level, Zacango offers a genuinely unusual zoo experience — its temperate highland climate gives it a character quite unlike the tropical zoos of southern Mexico.

Scale & Setting

The zoo covers an extensive area of pine and oak forest, with animal enclosures integrated into the natural woodland. Visitors travel through the park partly on foot and partly aboard a tourist train that tours the larger animal zones. The cooler highland climate makes it particularly comfortable for both visitors and cold-adapted animal species.

Animal Collection

Zacango houses a broad range of species across several themed zones:

  • African savannah – elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, and white rhinos
  • Asian species – tigers, Asiatic bears, and red pandas
  • Polar and sub-polar zone – polar bears, wolves, and arctic fox — well-suited to the highland climate
  • Mexican wildlife zone – jaguars, pumas, Mexican grey wolves, tapirs, and coatis
  • Primate island – chimpanzees, baboons, and spider monkeys
  • Bird section – flamingos, macaws, ostriches, and a walk-through aviary

Accessibility from Mexico City

Located approximately 70 kilometres southwest of Mexico City and 15 kilometres from Toluca, Zacango is within day-trip range of both cities, making it accessible to millions of residents of the Valley of Mexico. It is particularly popular with families from the State of Mexico and the southern suburbs of the capital.

A Unique Altitude Experience

The experience of visiting a zoo at over 2,600 metres elevation — surrounded by pine forest with snow-capped volcanoes visible on clear days — is genuinely distinctive. On a clear day, visitors can see Nevado de Toluca volcano from within the zoo grounds.

Zoológico de Chapultepec

Zoológico de Chapultepec

Zoo

Mexico City's Iconic Free Zoo in Chapultepec Park

Zoológico de Chapultepec is one of the most visited zoos in the world and the most beloved wildlife attraction in Mexico City. Located in the first section of Bosque de Chapultepec — the vast urban forest at the heart of the capital — the zoo has been open to the public since 1923 and has been completely free of charge since 1980.

World Record Giant Pandas

Chapultepec Zoo holds a unique place in zoological history as the first zoo outside of China to successfully breed giant pandas in captivity. The birth of Xin Xin and Tohui in the 1980s was a global sensation. Today the zoo continues to house giant pandas as part of an ongoing collaborative conservation programme with China, and they remain the zoo's most iconic residents.

Extraordinary Animal Collection

The zoo houses over 1,800 animals representing more than 200 species from Mexico, the Americas, and around the world:

  • Giant pandas – world-famous residents and symbol of the zoo
  • Mexican grey wolves – subject of an important reintroduction programme
  • Jaguars – Mexico's largest wild cat
  • Mexican axolotl – the critically endangered salamander endemic to Mexico City's lakes
  • Polar bears and African elephants – international species
  • Gorillas and chimpanzees – great apes in spacious habitats
  • Giraffes, zebras, and hippos – classic zoo favourites
  • Komodo dragons – rare reptile exhibits

Conservation Champion

Chapultepec Zoo is internationally recognised for its conservation work, particularly its efforts on behalf of species endemic to Mexico. The Mexican grey wolf recovery programme has been instrumental in preventing the extinction of this subspecies, with animals bred at Chapultepec being reintroduced into wild habitats in northern Mexico and the United States.

Free and Accessible

The fact that entry is completely free makes Chapultepec one of the most democratically accessible major zoos in the world. On weekends, the zoo attracts enormous crowds of Mexico City families, and annual visitor numbers consistently place it among the top ten most visited zoos globally.

Mexico's Drive-Through Safari Park

Africam Safari is Mexico's most unique zoological attraction and one of the most extraordinary wildlife parks in Latin America, located in Valsequillo, Puebla, approximately 12 kilometres southeast of the city of Puebla. Founded in 1972, it pioneered the drive-through safari concept in Mexico and continues to offer an experience unlike any other zoo in the country.

The centrepiece of Africam Safari is its drive-through safari zone, where visitors drive their own vehicles (or take a guided bus tour) through open-range enclosures where animals roam freely alongside the road.
