Europe's Largest Marine Mammal Park
Pioneering Marine Conservation Since 1965 Dolfinarium Harderwijk holds the unique distinction of being Europe's largest marine mammal park and the only place in the Netherlands where visitors can meet dolphins up close. Founded by entrepreneur Frits den Herder with the mission to 'make the Dutch population show respect for these most special and mythical sea mammals,' the park has been a leader in marine mammal care and education for nearly 60 years.
Unique Marine Experience Located on the shores of the Veluwemeer lake in historic Harderwijk, the Dolfinarium offers an unparalleled marine wildlife experience:
- Bottlenose dolphins - The park's flagship species, featured in educational shows
- California sea lions - Playful and intelligent marine performers
- Walruses - Massive Arctic marine mammals in specialized habitat
- Harbor porpoises - Native Dutch marine mammals in rehabilitation
- Seals - Both harbor and grey seals in naturalistic environments
- Rays and sharks - Interactive touch pools for hands-on encounters
Educational Mission & Conservation The Dolfinarium goes beyond entertainment to promote marine conservation:
- SOS Dolfijn partnership - Marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation
- Interactive experiences - Touch pools with rays, sharks, and North Sea fish
- Educational shows - Eight different presentations teaching marine biology
- Therapeutic programs - Special sessions for children with autism and Down syndrome
Historic Architecture & Facilities The park features the iconic blue dome built in 1969, which has become a landmark of Harderwijk. Modern facilities include multiple show venues, interactive touch pools, restaurants, play areas, and the Waterpret water park section for additional family entertainment.
Seasonal Operation Unlike many Dutch attractions, Dolfinarium operates seasonally from spring to autumn, using winter months for facility upgrades, animal care improvements, and maintenance of the complex marine life support systems.
