Kagoshima's Subtropical Zoo with Giant Pandas
Hirakawa Zoological Park (平川動物公園) is a spacious, modern zoo in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, at the southern tip of Kyushu. Home to approximately 1,400 animals across 230 species, it is one of Japan's finest provincial zoos and gained national recognition as one of only a few zoos in Japan to successfully breed giant pandas and house koalas.
🐼 Giant Pandas & Koalas
Hirakawa is celebrated for housing two of Japan's most sought-after zoo animals:
- Giant pandas – Hirakawa has achieved successful panda breeding, a rare distinction among Japanese zoos
- Koalas – One of the few Japanese zoos to house koalas year-round, benefiting from Kagoshima's warm climate
- The panda and koala combination makes it one of the most distinctive zoos in western Japan
