Japan's Greatest Open-Air Architectural Museum
Museum Meiji Mura (博物館明治村) in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan's most extraordinary and ambitious open-air museums — a vast 1 million m² parkland in which nearly 70 authentic historical buildings from the Meiji period (1868–1912) have been painstakingly relocated and preserved. It is one of the most visited open-air museums in all of Japan.
🏛️ 70 Rescued Meiji-Era Buildings
Every structure in Meiji Mura is an authentic piece of Japanese history, moved from its original location to be preserved:
- Imperial Hotel (Tokyo lobby) – The Frank Lloyd Wright-designed lobby of Tokyo's famous Imperial Hotel, saved from demolition in 1968
- Kyoto St. Francis Xavier Cathedral – A beautifully ornate Meiji-era Catholic church
- Natsume Soseki's Tokyo residence – The actual home of Japan's most beloved novelist
- Sapporo Telephone Exchange – One of Japan's earliest telecommunications buildings
- Various schools, courthouses, breweries, lighthouses and hospitals from across Meiji-era Japan
- 10 buildings designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan
🚃 Working Historical Transport
The park operates authentic period transport:
- Meiji-era streetcar running through the village on original tracks
- Steam locomotive pulling period passenger carriages through the park
- 1910s-era steam launch on the park's central lake
🌸 Beautiful Natural Setting
Meiji Mura occupies a lakeside hillside in Inuyama:
- Iruka Lake forms the backdrop to the park's lower areas
- Cherry blossoms line the village streets in spring
- Autumn foliage transforms the hillside in October–November
