Popularité
One of the most dramatically situated zoos in Europe, embedded within the medieval Kalemegdan Fortress at the confluence of the Sava and Danube in Belgrade.
Serbia's Beloved Capital Zoo
Belgrade Zoo (Beogradski zoo vrt) is Serbia's most popular zoo and one of the oldest in the Balkans, located within Kalemegdan Fortress â the great medieval fortress at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers in the heart of Belgrade. Founded in 1936, the zoo is embedded within the ancient fortification walls of Kalemegdan, giving it one of the most dramatic and historically significant settings of any zoo in the world.
Kalemegdan Fortress Setting
The zoo occupies part of the Kalemegdan complex â the iconic fortress that has been a symbol of Belgrade for over 2,000 years. Walking through the zoo means walking among Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman-era fortification walls, towers, and ramparts. The Danube and Sava rivers are visible from many parts of the zoo, and the panoramic views from the fortress heights are breathtaking. It is, without question, one of the most atmospherically unique zoo settings in Europe.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses approximately 2,000 animals across 270 species:
- Lions, tigers, and leopards â the zoo's headline big cats
- Bears â brown bears and polar bears
- Primates â chimpanzees, gorillas, and various smaller primates
- Hippos â in an aquatic enclosure within the fortress walls
- Giraffes and zebras â African species
- Wolves and lynx â native Balkan carnivores
- Birds of prey â eagles, vultures, and owls in open-air aviaries
- Reptile collection â crocodilians, large snakes, and lizards
A Belgrade Icon
Belgrade Zoo is one of the most beloved institutions in Serbia. For generations of Belgraders, a visit to the zoo at Kalemegdan â combined with a walk along the fortress ramparts â has been a quintessential city experience. The zoo draws over 500,000 visitors annually and is one of the top tourist attractions in the Serbian capital.
