Estonia's national zoo, internationally renowned for its mountain ungulate collection â one of the world's finest. 90 hectares of forested terrain near Tallinn.
Estonia's National Zoo
Tallinn Zoo (Tallinna Loomaaed) is the national zoological institution of Estonia, located in the Rocca al Mare district on the western edge of Tallinn, the Estonian capital. Founded in 1939, the zoo covers 90 hectares of forested terrain and is one of the largest zoos in the Baltic region by land area.
Mountain Ungulate Specialist
Tallinn Zoo has a remarkable international reputation as one of the world's leading specialists in mountain ungulates â hoofed animals from mountainous regions. The zoo holds one of the largest and most genetically diverse collections of mountain sheep, goats, and related species in any zoo worldwide, and coordinates breeding programmes for many of these species.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses approximately 350 species with outstanding collections of:
- Mountain ungulates â snow leopard prey species including argali, markhor, Marco Polo sheep, and Himalayan tahr
- Snow leopards â in a habitat that reflects the zoo's Central Asian mountain specialisation
- Polar bears â among the zoo's most beloved residents
- Amur tigers â the Russian Far East's endangered tiger subspecies
- European bison â once extinct in the wild, central to the zoo's conservation mission
- Brown bears and wolves â native Baltic and European species
- Penguins â Humboldt and little penguins in an aquatic habitat
- Primates â chimpanzees and various smaller primates
Conservation & Baltic Heritage
Tallinn Zoo plays an important role in conservation of both global species and species native to Estonia and the Baltic region. Its location in the boreal forest zone of northern Europe gives its native wildlife exhibits a particular authenticity â the wolves and bears at Tallinn Zoo come from ecosystems very similar to Estonia's own forests.
