Popularité
Costa Rica's most respected wildlife rescue centre and conservation park, internationally recognised for its ethical approach and extraordinary bird collection.
Costa Rica's Premier Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre
Zoo Ave is Costa Rica's most celebrated wildlife conservation park, located in La Garita, Alajuela, approximately 25 kilometres west of San José. Rather than a traditional zoo, Zoo Ave operates primarily as a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, making it one of the most ethically regarded wildlife facilities in Latin America.
Mission: Rescue & Rehabilitation
Founded in the 1990s, Zoo Ave began as a bird sanctuary and has grown into a comprehensive wildlife rescue centre. The park receives hundreds of animals each year that have been confiscated from illegal wildlife trafficking, injured in the wild, or orphaned. Animals that cannot be returned to the wild find permanent sanctuary at Zoo Ave.
Extraordinary Bird Collection
Zoo Ave is particularly renowned for its spectacular collection of birds, reflecting Costa Rica's status as one of the world's top birdwatching destinations:
- Scarlet and great green macaws â symbols of Costa Rican wildlife
- Harpy eagles â one of the most powerful raptors on Earth
- Toucans and toucanets â the iconic birds of the tropics
- Resplendent quetzals â among the most beautiful birds in the world
- Over 100 bird species in total
Mammals & Reptiles
Beyond birds, Zoo Ave houses an impressive range of:
- Jaguars, pumas, and ocelots â Costa Rica's wild cats
- Giant anteaters and two- and three-toed sloths
- Spider monkeys, howler monkeys, and white-faced capuchins
- Tapirs and white-tailed deer
- Crocodiles and sea turtles (during rehabilitation)
Eco-Tourism & Education
Zoo Ave is deeply committed to education and eco-tourism. The park collaborates with schools, universities, and international research organisations on conservation and breeding programmes. Visitors walk through beautifully maintained tropical gardens, making the experience both educational and immersive.
Zoo Ave is a must-visit for anyone travelling through Costa Rica who wants to see the country's incredible wildlife up close while supporting genuine conservation work.
