Popularité
Charming compact zoo in the beautiful baroque city of Olomouc, ideal for families combining a wildlife visit with the city's UNESCO heritage.
Olomouc's Charming Wildlife Park
Zoo Olomouc is the zoological garden of Olomouc, one of the Czech Republic's most beautiful historic cities and the capital of the Olomouc Region. Located in the PodÄbrady area close to the city centre, the zoo has been a cherished institution for local families since its founding in 1956.
A Compact Urban Zoo
Zoo Olomouc is characterised by its compact, intimate scale. Unlike the sprawling landscape parks of Prague or Brno, Olomouc Zoo is a walkable urban zoo where families can comfortably see all the animals in a half-day visit â making it ideal for children and for combining with a visit to Olomouc's remarkable historic city centre, which contains some of the finest baroque architecture in Central Europe.
Animal Collection
The zoo maintains a well-curated collection of around 1,000 animals across approximately 230 species:
- Big cats â lions, tigers, and leopards
- Bears â brown bears and polar bears
- Giraffes â among the most popular residents
- Primates â chimpanzees, spider monkeys, and various smaller primates
- Reptile pavillon â crocodiles, Komodo dragons, and a comprehensive snake collection
- Penguins â in a dedicated aquatic habitat
- Birds of prey â eagles, owls, and vultures in open-air aviaries
Historic City Context
Olomouc is often described as the Czech Republic's most underrated city. Its Holy Trinity Column â a UNESCO World Heritage Site â is the finest example of baroque sculpture in Central Europe, and the city's six baroque fountains and historic university give it an extraordinary cultural depth. Zoo Olomouc is a natural complement to a visit to this remarkable city.
