Tokyo's Charming Neighbourhood Zoo in Kichijoji
Inokashira Park Zoo (井の頭自然文化園) is a small, beloved zoo nestled inside the popular Inokashira Park in Kichijoji, one of Tokyo's most desirable and trendy neighbourhoods. Operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, it is one of four metropolitan zoos in the city and has a special reputation for its cosy, intimate atmosphere and focus on Japanese native animals.
🐦 Japanese Wildlife Focus
Unlike larger zoos, Inokashira specialises in animals native to Japan:
- Japanese giant flying squirrel – One of the few places in Japan to see this nocturnal glider
- Japanese raccoon dog (tanuki) – The beloved folkloric creature of Japanese culture
- Japanese macaques – Native primates in naturalistic enclosures
- Japanese serow – A rare goat-antelope unique to Japan's mountains
- Mandarin ducks – Brilliantly coloured native waterfowl on the park pond
- Japanese pond turtles and native freshwater species
🐘 Hanako the Elephant – A National Legend
Inokashira was home to Hanako, Japan's most famous elephant, who lived at the zoo from 1954 until her passing in 2016 at the estimated age of 69 – one of the oldest elephants ever recorded in Japan. Her long life and story made her a beloved national figure.
🎠 Two Sections
The zoo is split across two areas of Inokashira Park:
- Main zoo area – Mammals, birds, and reptiles along the park's forest edge
- Aquatic life section – Beside the central pond, featuring Japanese freshwater species and waterbirds
- A short walk through the park connects the two sections
🌸 Inokashira Park Setting
The zoo's greatest asset may be its location:
- Inokashira Pond with rowboats and swans right beside the zoo
- Cherry blossom season turns the park into one of Tokyo's most beloved hanami spots
- Kichijoji – Tokyo's perennially voted "most desirable neighbourhood" surrounds the park
- Ghibli Museum – Studio Ghibli's museum is just a 10-minute walk away
