Historic Island Zoo with Unique Location

Scenic Island Setting Opole Zoo, founded in 1930, is uniquely located on Bolko Island in the Oder River, creating a distinctive and picturesque setting for this regional zoological garden. The 20-hectare facility houses around 1,000 animals representing approximately 290 species.

Resilient History The zoo has demonstrated remarkable resilience, having been rebuilt multiple times throughout its history:

  • Originally established in the 1930s on a 1-hectare private portion of the island
  • Destroyed during WWII with animals evacuated to Germany
  • Reopened in 1953 after post-war reconstruction
  • Severely damaged by the devastating 1997 flood but rebuilt once again
  • Current modern facilities represent the zoo's third major reconstruction

Conservation Specializations Opole Zoo has developed particular expertise in:

  • Tamarin and lemur breeding programs - nationally recognized success
  • Ungulate species conservation - specialized hoofed animal programs
  • California Sea Lion care - featuring Poland's only facility for this species

Modern Facilities & Unique Features Following the zoo's 1996 modernization concept, animals are displayed in zoogeographic regions, creating immersive continental experiences. Notable facilities include the 2007 California Sea Lion pool - the only facility of its kind in Poland.

Island Ecosystem The unique island location creates a special microenvironment, with the surrounding Oder River providing natural boundaries and scenic beauty that enhances the visitor experience while offering animals varied terrain and water features.
