Opened in 1985, it is home to over 2,000 animals from 171 species and is notable for its entirely natural, forested habitat that allows animals to live in close-to-wild conditions unlike any other Indian zoo.

🌿 Natural Forest Setting
What makes Vandalur unique is that the zoo is built within a protected natural forest, not on cleared land. Animals roam enclosures that contain the original forest vegetation — mature trees, undergrowth, and natural terrain. This gives the zoo an unusually wild and naturalistic character.
🚌 Lion & Deer Safari
The zoo operates a separate Lion Safari and Deer Safari via buses, allowing visitors to observe predators and prey in large semi-open environments.
