Populariteit
One of Europe's oldest zoos (1866) and most architecturally stunning, with world-class Art Nouveau buildings in Budapest's City Park. Over 1 million annual visitors.
One of Europe's Oldest and Most Beautiful Zoos
Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden (Fővárosi Állat- és Növénykert) is the oldest zoo in Hungary and one of the oldest in the world, founded in 1866. Located in City Park (Városliget) in the heart of Budapest, it is one of the most visited attractions in the Hungarian capital, drawing over one million visitors annually.
Extraordinary Art Nouveau Architecture
What truly sets Budapest Zoo apart from almost any other zoo in the world is its extraordinary collection of Art Nouveau buildings, constructed in the early 20th century. The zoo's entrance gate, elephant house, bird house, and palm house are all masterpieces of Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture — among the finest examples of the style anywhere in Europe. These buildings are listed monuments and visiting the zoo is as much an architectural pilgrimage as a wildlife experience.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses approximately 1,000 animals across 180 species, with particular strength in:
- African elephants — in the iconic Art Nouveau elephant house (one of Europe's most beautiful)
- Hippos — both common and pygmy hippos
- Giraffes, zebras, and rhinos in the African section
- Gorillas and chimpanzees — great apes in a modern pavilion
- Polar bears — in an impressive Arctic habitat
- Australian zone — kangaroos, wallabies, and Tasmanian devils
- Reptile house — Komodo dragons, giant tortoises, and crocodilians
- Nocturnal house — animals active at night in a specially lit environment
Botanical Garden Component
The zoo also maintains an extensive botanical garden with thousands of plant species from around the world, including a large tropical palm house that is one of the finest in Central Europe.
City Park Location
The zoo is located in Városliget (City Park) — Budapest's beloved urban park, also home to the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Vajdahunyad Castle. A visit to Budapest Zoo integrates perfectly with a broader City Park day out in one of Europe's most beautiful capitals.
