Ukraine's oldest zoo (1908), one of Eastern Europe's most historic zoological institutions, centrally located in Kyiv.
Ukraine's Historic Capital Zoo
Kyiv Zoo (Київський зоопарк) is Ukraine's oldest and most important zoo, located in the Shevchenkivsky district of Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, within walking distance of the city centre. Founded in 1908, it is one of the oldest zoos in Eastern Europe and a cherished institution that has survived two world wars, Soviet rule, and Ukraine's turbulent recent history.
Over a Century of History
Founded during the era of the Russian Empire, Kyiv Zoo has endured extraordinary historical upheaval. It survived the devastation of World War II — when much of Kyiv was destroyed — and continued operating through the Soviet period, emerging as one of Ukraine's most beloved public institutions. In recent years, zoo staff have continued to care for the animals despite the challenges facing Ukraine.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses approximately 4,000 animals across 350+ species:
- Polar bears — among the zoo's most iconic residents
- Amur tigers and Amur leopards — critically endangered Russian Far East species
- African lions and leopards
- Gorillas and chimpanzees — great apes in dedicated habitats
- Hippos and giraffes — popular African species
- Wolves and brown bears — native Eastern European species
- European bison — the iconic bovid restored from extinction
- Snow leopards — Central Asian mountain cats
- Primates — over 15 species including various Old World monkeys
Cultural Significance
Kyiv Zoo is deeply woven into Ukrainian cultural identity. For generations of Kyivans, a visit to the zoo has been a cornerstone of childhood — and the zoo's continued operation is a symbol of Ukrainian resilience and the determination to maintain normal life and care for all living things in challenging times.
