Populariteit
Belarus's national zoo with 4,700+ animals, home to a significant European bison collection connected to the Białowieża Forest heritage.
Belarus's National Zoo
Minsk Zoo (Мінскі заалагічны сад) is the national zoological garden of Belarus, located in the Frunzensky district of Minsk, the Belarusian capital. Founded in 1984, it is a relatively young zoo by European standards but has grown into a substantial institution housing over 400 species and serving as Belarus's primary centre for zoological education and conservation.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses approximately 4,700 animals across 430+ species, one of the largest collections in Eastern Europe:
- Amur tigers — the Russian Far East's critically endangered big cat
- Polar bears — iconic Arctic species, among the zoo's most popular residents
- Snow leopards — Central Asian mountain cats
- African lions and leopards
- Giraffes, zebras, and hippos — classic zoo species in large enclosures
- Gorillas and chimpanzees — great apes in modern indoor-outdoor habitats
- European bison — the iconic species closely associated with Belarus; the Białowieża Forest (partly in Belarus) is the last primeval lowland forest in Europe and the home of the last wild bison population
- Wolves, lynx, and brown bears — native Belarusian forest species
Białowieża Connection
Belarus is home to half of the Białowieża Forest — the last primeval lowland forest in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This forest harbours the world's largest remaining population of European bison. Minsk Zoo's bison collection has special national significance, connecting the zoo's conservation mission to one of Europe's most extraordinary natural treasures.
Minsk's Green Setting
The zoo is located within a green park zone of Minsk, the meticulously planned Soviet-era capital known for its wide boulevards and abundant green spaces. The park setting gives the zoo a pleasant, open character well-suited to family visits.
