Populariteit
Russia's oldest zoo, founded 1864, one of Europe's largest with 12,000+ animals. Home to Amur tigers, Amur leopards, giant pandas, and polar bears in central Moscow.
One of Europe's Oldest and Largest Zoos
Moscow Zoo (Московский зоопарк) is Russia's oldest and largest zoo, located in the Presnensky district of central Moscow, just minutes from the Kremlin. Founded in 1864, it is one of the oldest zoological gardens in Europe and houses one of the largest animal collections on the continent, with over 12,000 animals representing more than 1,000 species.
Scale & History
The numbers at Moscow Zoo are extraordinary. With over 12,000 individual animals across 1,000+ species, it ranks among the largest zoo collections in the world. Founded in the era of Alexander II, the zoo has survived revolution, two world wars, and the Soviet period, emerging as one of Russia's most treasured public institutions.
The zoo occupies two territories connected by a bridge — the Old Territory (historic grounds) and the New Territory — together covering 21 hectares in the heart of Moscow.
Animal Highlights
The collection spans all major animal groups with exceptional depth:
- Giant pandas — Moscow Zoo houses giant pandas as part of China's loan programme
- Polar bears — a particularly important species for Russia
- Amur tigers — the Russian Far East's critically endangered big cat; the zoo runs a significant breeding programme
- Snow leopards — the elusive cat of Central Asian mountains
- Amur leopards — the world's rarest big cat, with fewer than 100 individuals in the wild
- Bison — the European bison, once extinct in the wild and restored through zoo breeding
- Primates — gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and over 20 primate species
- Aquarium — sharks, rays, and a major freshwater fish section
Conservation of Russian Species
Moscow Zoo is a world leader in conservation of species from Russia and the former Soviet space. Its breeding programmes for the Amur tiger, Amur leopard, snow leopard, and bison have contributed directly to wild population recovery. The zoo collaborates with wildlife reserves across Russia's vast territory.
Central Moscow Location
Few major zoos in the world are as centrally located as Moscow Zoo — it is within walking distance of the Kremlin, Arbat Street, and the city centre, making it easily accessible to both Moscow residents and international tourists.
