Populariteit
Latvia's national zoo, founded 1912, set within the magnificent forested Mežaparks district of Riga. One of the largest collections in the Baltic region.
Latvia's National Zoo
Riga Zoo (Rīgas Nacionālais zooloģiskais dārzs) is the national zoo of Latvia, located in Mežaparks (Forest Park) in Riga, the Latvian capital. Founded in 1912, it is one of the oldest zoos in the Baltic region and the oldest in the former Soviet Baltic republics. Set within Mežaparks — one of Riga's great urban forests and a UNESCO-recognised garden city district — the zoo occupies a naturally wooded setting of extraordinary beauty.
Mežaparks — Forest Park Setting
Mežaparks (literally "Forest Park") is one of the most beautiful urban districts in the Baltic region — a historic garden suburb of Riga featuring early 20th-century wooden villas set among towering pine and oak forest. The zoo is embedded within this forest, and many enclosures are set beneath the canopy of genuine boreal woodland. Walking through Riga Zoo feels genuinely immersive in a way that few urban zoos can match.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses approximately 3,000 animals across 500+ species, one of the largest collections in the Baltic region:
- Elephants — Asian elephants in a large indoor-outdoor habitat
- Giraffes and hippos — popular African species
- Big cats — tigers, lions, snow leopards, and jaguars
- Polar bears — iconic Arctic species well-suited to Riga's cool climate
- Brown bears and wolves — native Latvian wildlife
- European bison — a conservation priority species restored from extinction
- Primates — gorillas, chimpanzees, and various smaller primates
- Penguins and sea lions — aquatic species in dedicated habitats
- Reptile house — a comprehensive collection of tropical reptiles
