Bucharest's main zoo, set in the Băneasa forest in northern Bucharest, showcasing Romania's rich Carpathian wildlife.
Romania's Capital City Zoo
Grădina Zoologică București is the main zoological garden of Bucharest, the capital of Romania, located in the Băneasa forest area in the northern part of the city. Founded in 1955, the zoo is set within a forested parkland that gives it a pleasant, green character quite different from the dense urban zoos of many other European capitals.
Forest Setting
The zoo's location within the Băneasa Forest — one of Bucharest's great green lungs — provides a natural, woodland setting for its animal habitats. The combination of managed zoo enclosures and surrounding forest creates an atmosphere that is more relaxed and nature-like than many urban zoos.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses a broad range of species from Romania, Europe, and internationally:
- Brown bears — the most iconic Romanian animal, once widespread in the Carpathian Mountains
- Grey wolves — Carpathian wolves, native to Romania's vast forests
- Lynx — the Carpathian lynx, a secretive cat of Romania's mountain forests
- Bison — European bison, reintroduced to Romanian forests after near-extinction
- Deer and wild boar — abundant in Romania's Carpathian landscapes
- Lions, tigers, and leopards — international big cats
- Primates — chimpanzees, baboons, and various smaller species
- Reptiles and birds — diverse collections across both groups
Romania's Wildlife Heritage
Romania has some of the most intact large mammal populations in Europe — the largest brown bear population in the EU, significant wolf and lynx populations, and thriving herds of red deer and wild boar in the Carpathians. The Bucharest zoo reflects this rich wildlife heritage and serves as an important educational resource for Romanian schoolchildren and families.
