Populariteit
Lima's most modern privately operated zoo, serving eastern Lima with high-quality naturalistic habitats since 2008.
Lima's Modern Wildlife Park
Zoo de Huachipa is Lima's most modern zoological park, located in the Huachipa district of eastern Lima, in the Ate Vitarte area. Opened in 2008, it is a privately operated zoo that was designed with a strong focus on naturalistic habitats, visitor experience, and conservation education — a significant step forward from the older public institutions in Peru.
Modern Zoo Design
Zoo de Huachipa was built to contemporary zoo standards with spacious, naturalistic enclosures that prioritise animal welfare. The park's design reflects international best practice in zoo architecture, with landscaped habitats, interpretive signage, and thoughtful visitor pathways.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses species from Peru, South America, and internationally:
- Jaguars and pumas — Peru's apex predators
- Spectacled bears — the only bear native to South America, found in Peru's Andean cloud forests
- Giant anteaters and tapirs — large Amazonian and Andean mammals
- Andean condors — Peru's most iconic bird
- Llamas and alpacas — domesticated Andean camelids central to Peruvian culture
- Penguins — Humboldt penguins, native to Peru's Pacific coast
- Lions, tigers, and giraffes — international species popular with visitors
- Primates — spider monkeys, capuchins, and various small primates
- Reptiles — caimans, boas, and Galápagos-style tortoises
Humboldt Penguin Exhibit
One of the zoo's most popular features is its Humboldt penguin exhibit. Humboldt penguins are native to the Peruvian and Chilean Pacific coast — a surprising fact for many visitors — and seeing them in a well-maintained habitat gives Limeños an accessible encounter with one of Peru's most unusual native animals.
Lima Family Destination
Zoo de Huachipa serves the large, rapidly growing eastern districts of Lima, providing a quality wildlife experience to parts of the city that have traditionally been underserved by cultural and recreational facilities. It is particularly popular with families from Ate, La Molina, and surrounding eastern Lima districts.
