Populariteit
Costa Rica's oldest zoo, established in 1916, centrally located in San José and a beloved landmark of the capital.
San José's Urban Wildlife Park
Parque Zoológico Simón Bolívar is Costa Rica's oldest zoo, located in the heart of San José in the Barrio Amón district. Founded in 1916, it is one of the longest-running zoological institutions in all of Central America, woven into the cultural fabric of the Costa Rican capital.
A Green Oasis in the City
Set within a lush tropical garden, the zoo provides a surprisingly tranquil escape from the bustle of San José. The grounds are shaded by towering trees and criss-crossed by walking paths, making a visit here as much a nature walk as a wildlife encounter.
Wildlife on Display
The zoo showcases species native to Costa Rica and the Central American region:
- Jaguars and ocelots – showcasing Costa Rica's feline biodiversity
- Tapirs – the country's largest land mammal
- Spider monkeys and white-faced capuchins – primates native to Costa Rican forests
- Scarlet macaws and toucans – emblematic birds of the tropics
- Crocodiles and caimans – found in Costa Rican rivers and wetlands
- Green iguanas and various snake species
- Sloths – two- and three-toed, Costa Rica's most beloved animals
Conservation & Rehabilitation
Parque Zoológico Simón Bolívar collaborates with the Fundazoo foundation and works alongside Zoo Ave on wildlife conservation and rehabilitation efforts. The zoo has progressively modernised its facilities while maintaining its historic character.
Ideal for City Visitors
For travellers spending time in San José, the Simón Bolívar Zoo offers an excellent half-day activity. Its central location means it is easily reachable on foot from most hotels in the Barrio Amón and downtown San José area.
