Largest zoo in western Mexico with over 1,500 animals, dramatically located on the rim of Huentitán Canyon in Guadalajara.
Western Mexico's Largest Zoo
Zoológico de Guadalajara is the largest zoo in western Mexico, located in the Huentitán district of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco and Mexico's second-largest city. Founded in 1958, the zoo sits at the edge of the dramatic Barranca de Huentitán canyon, giving it one of the most spectacular natural settings of any zoo in Latin America.
Dramatic Natural Setting
The zoo is built along the rim and slopes of the Huentitán Canyon, a deep natural ravine that slices through the northern edge of Guadalajara. This extraordinary setting creates a genuinely wild backdrop for the animal exhibits and provides visitors with spectacular canyon views throughout their visit. The canyon itself is part of a protected ecological reserve.
Animal Collection
Zoológico de Guadalajara houses over 1,500 animals representing more than 360 species:
- African savannah – lions, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and zebras in large naturalistic habitats
- Big cats – tigers, jaguars, leopards, and cheetahs
- Great apes – gorillas and chimpanzees
- Mexican wildlife – jaguars, pumas, ocelots, tapirs, and Mexican wolves
- Aquatic species – sea lions, penguins, and a dolphinarium
- Bird collection – over 100 bird species including flamingos, macaws, and birds of prey
- Reptile house – anacondas, iguanas, crocodiles, and Komodo dragons
Dolphinarium & Shows
One of the zoo's most popular features is its dolphinarium, offering regular dolphin shows and educational presentations. The facility is one of the few in Mexico outside of coastal theme parks to offer dolphin interactions.
Family Facilities
The zoo features extensive family infrastructure including electric train tours of the grounds, playgrounds, picnic areas, restaurants, and a children's petting zoo. Weekend visits are extremely popular with Tapatío families (residents of Guadalajara).
