Historic Conservation Focus Established in 1938 in Krefeld's Grotenburgpark, this 13-hectare zoo has developed into one of Germany's leading facilities for great ape conservation, big cats, African savanna species, and tropical birds. Home to approximately 1,300 animals representing 225 species, the zoo emphasizes quality care over quantity.

Great Ape Conservation Leadership Krefeld Zoo has achieved international recognition for its primate conservation work, particularly with great apes. The facility houses state-of-the-art tropical houses for gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans, contributing significantly to European breeding programs and conservation research.

Tropical House Complex The zoo features three magnificent tropical houses: the Monkey Tropic House (1975), Bird Tropics Hall (1989), and the impressive 1,100m² Rainforest House (1998), creating authentic environments for subtropical and tropical species.

Resilience and Renewal Following the tragic 2020 fire that destroyed the original monkey house, the zoo has demonstrated remarkable resilience, rebuilding facilities with enhanced safety measures while maintaining its commitment to primate conservation and education.
