Saarland's Premier African Wildlife Sanctuary
Historic Foundation and Reconstruction Founded in 1932 but completely destroyed during World War II, Saarbrücken Zoo was rebuilt in 1956 on 15 hectares at the foot of Eschberg Hill. As Saarland's largest zoo, it has evolved into a premier destination specializing in African wildlife conservation and education.
African Species Specialization Home to over 1,700 animals from 160 species, the zoo focuses particularly on African fauna, featuring impressive collections from diverse African ecosystems including savanna, rainforest, and coastal regions. The centerpiece Africa House provides immersive experiences of African landscapes and wildlife.
Conservation Leadership As a member of the Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ) and European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), the zoo actively participates in international conservation programs, with particular focus on endangered gorillas, Madagascar lemurs, and African drill monkeys.
Unique Features The zoo's natural hillside setting creates diverse microhabitats while the innovative webcam system allows virtual visits to observe Humboldt penguins and Javanese monkeys in real-time, connecting global audiences to wildlife conservation.
