Tokyo's Spacious Wildlife Sanctuary in the Hills
Tama Zoological Park (多摩動物公園) is one of four zoos operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, located in Hino City on the western outskirts of Tokyo. Opened in 1958, it is Tokyo's largest zoo by area at 52 hectares, designed as a spacious, park-like environment where animals live in large naturalistic enclosures – a deliberate contrast to the compact urban setting of Ueno Zoo.
🦁 Large-Scale Habitats
Tama's defining characteristic is the generosity of space given to its animals:
- Lion Safari Bus – Board a bus and drive through an enclosure with African lions freely roaming around the vehicle
- African Savannah – Cheetahs, ostriches, and giraffes in broad open plains
- Australian Domain – Koalas, wallabies, and Tasmanian devils in authentic bush setting
- Orangutan Sky Walk – Great apes traverse overhead cables directly above visitors
- Elephant enclosure – One of the most spacious in Japan
🦋 Insectarium
Tama Zoo is particularly famous for its Insectarium, one of Japan's finest:
- Butterfly Garden – Walk-through tropical greenhouse with hundreds of free-flying butterflies
- Ant colony displays with active foraging tunnels visible through glass
- Beetle and firefly exhibitions celebrating Japan's rich insect culture
- Seasonal firefly evenings in summer – A unique and magical experience
🦌 Japanese Wildlife
As a Tokyo metropolitan zoo, Tama has a strong focus on native Japanese fauna:
- Hokkaido brown bears – Japan's largest terrestrial predator
- Japanese macaques in naturalistic mountain habitat
- Japanese cranes and native shorebirds
- Tsushima leopard cat – One of Japan's most endangered native mammals
