Russia's second oldest zoo, famous for remaining open throughout the Siege of Leningrad 1941–1944. One of Europe's most historically significant zoos.
Russia's Second City Zoo
Leningrad Zoo (Ленинградский зоопарк) is the zoological garden of Saint Petersburg, Russia's cultural capital and second-largest city. Founded in 1865 — just one year after Moscow Zoo — it is Russia's second oldest zoo and one of the oldest in Europe. The zoo is located on Zayachy Island adjacent to the Kronverksky Prospekt, in the heart of Saint Petersburg's historic centre.
Survival Through History
Leningrad Zoo has one of the most extraordinary histories of any zoo in the world. During the Siege of Leningrad (1941–1944) — the longest and most destructive siege in history — the zoo remained open throughout, providing a vital morale boost to the city's suffering population. Zoo staff remained to care for the animals under constant bombardment, and several animals became famous symbols of the city's defiance. A hippopotamus named Beauty (Красотка) became the most celebrated, with keepers carrying buckets of water to bathe her during the siege despite the extreme hardship.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses over 2,000 animals representing approximately 600 species:
- Polar bears — emblematic of Russia's Arctic north
- Amur tigers — the critically endangered tiger subspecies of the Russian Far East
- Snow leopards — the elusive cat of Central Asian high mountains
- Reindeer — an iconic animal of Russia's north
- Walruses — extraordinary Arctic marine mammals
- European bison — once extinct in the wild, restored through zoo breeding
- Primates — chimpanzees, gorillas, and various smaller primates
- Reptile house — a large collection of snakes, lizards, and crocodilians
Saint Petersburg Setting
The zoo is situated in one of the world's most beautiful cities, close to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Hermitage, and the historic Neva River. A visit to Leningrad Zoo integrates naturally with a broader day in Saint Petersburg's remarkable historic centre.
