Peru's most visited urban attraction with over 2 million annual visitors, uniquely combining a world-class zoo with pre-Columbian archaeological ruins.
Lima's Landmark Zoo & Archaeological Park
Parque de las Leyendas (Park of Legends) is Peru's most visited attraction after Machu Picchu, located in the San Miguel district of Lima. Founded in 1964, it is a uniquely Peruvian institution that combines a full zoological garden with an open-air archaeological site — several genuine pre-Columbian ruins are preserved within the park grounds.
A Zoo Unlike Any Other
What sets Parque de las Leyendas apart from every other zoo in South America is its integration with Peru's ancient history. The park is built around and among genuine Inca and pre-Inca archaeological structures, including the Huaca Middendorf and several other pre-Columbian burial mounds and temples. Visiting the zoo means walking past ruins that are thousands of years old — a combination found nowhere else in the world.
Three Ecological Zones
The park is designed around Peru's three major natural regions, each containing the wildlife of that ecosystem:
- Costa (Coast) — desert coastal species including Peruvian desert fox, Humboldt penguins, and sea lions
- Sierra (Highlands) — Andean species including spectacled bears, vicuñas, llamas, pumas, and Andean condors
- Selva (Jungle) — Amazon rainforest species including jaguars, tapirs, giant otters, anacondas, and hundreds of bird species
Animal Collection
The park houses over 4,500 animals representing more than 250 species — one of the largest animal collections in South America:
- Jaguars and pumas — Peru's apex predators
- Giant anteaters and giant armadillos
- Andean condors — the symbol of the Andes and Peru's most iconic bird
- Spectacled bears — the only bear in South America
- Amazon river dolphins — extremely rare in captivity
- Anacondas — the world's largest snake by mass
Cultural & Educational Mission
The park's name — Park of Legends — reflects its mission to celebrate Peru's extraordinary cultural and natural heritage. It is a deeply patriotic institution, beloved by Limeños, and a rite of passage for Peruvian schoolchildren. Annual visitor numbers exceed 2 million, making it one of the most visited parks of any kind in South America.
