Caracas's second zoo, serving central and eastern districts of the Venezuelan capital as a compact community wildlife park.
Caracas's Second Zoo
Parque Zoológico El Pinar is the second major zoological park in Caracas, located in the El Paraíso district of the Venezuelan capital. Smaller and more intimate than the large Caricuao zoo on the western side of the city, El Pinar serves the central and eastern districts of Caracas and is particularly popular with families living in the urbanísations of central Caracas.
A Neighbourhood Zoo
El Pinar has the character of a classic neighbourhood zoo — accessible, compact, and deeply embedded in the daily life of the surrounding community. Weekends bring out families from across central Caracas, and the park functions as much as a community green space as a zoological institution.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses a selection of Venezuelan and international species:
- Jaguars and pumas — Venezuela's native big cats
- Tapirs and capybaras — large mammals of the Venezuelan interior
- Deer and peccaries — species common in Venezuelan forests and llanos
- Caimans and anacondas — Venezuela's wetland reptiles
- Parrots and macaws — vibrant birds of the Venezuelan tropics
- Monkeys — various New World primate species
- African species — lions and other international animals
Green Space in the Capital
Like Caricuao, El Pinar provides valuable green open space in one of South America's most densely populated capital cities. The park's tree-shaded grounds offer Caraqueños a respite from the city's intense urban energy, and the zoo is a regular destination for school groups from schools across the central districts of the city.
