Ecuador's only major zoo and most visited, famous for spectacled bears, Andean condors, and Galápagos giant tortoises near Quito.
Ecuador's Most Popular Zoo
Zoo de Guayllabamba is the most visited zoo in Ecuador, located in the town of Guayllabamba in Pichincha province, approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Quito in the Guayllabamba river valley. Founded in 1997, it is Ecuador's only major zoological institution and is particularly celebrated for its collection of Andean spectacled bears — the only bear species native to South America.
Spectacular Andean Setting
The zoo is set in the warm, dry Guayllabamba valley at an altitude of approximately 2,200 metres — significantly lower and warmer than Quito itself, giving the valley a microclimate ideal for a wide range of animal species. The surrounding landscape of dry scrubland and the Guayllabamba river gorge provides a dramatic backdrop.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses over 800 animals representing 100 species, with an emphasis on Ecuador's extraordinary biodiversity:
- Spectacled bears — Ecuador's most iconic native mammal; the zoo runs a significant breeding programme
- Pumas — Ecuador's apex land predator
- Andean condors — one of the world's largest flying birds; the zoo participates in condor reintroduction programmes
- Giant anteaters and tapirs
- Caimans and anacondas — Amazon basin species
- Galápagos tortoises — Ecuador's most famous animals, from the archipelago that inspired Darwin
- Capybaras, peccaries, and coatis
- Tropical birds — toucans, macaws, Andean cock-of-the-rock, and dozens more
Galápagos Giant Tortoises
The zoo houses Galápagos giant tortoises — among the most famous animals in the world and the living symbols of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Seeing these extraordinary creatures at close range, in a well-maintained habitat, is one of the highlights of any visit.
Quito Day Trip
Guayllabamba Zoo is a standard day trip from Quito and is frequently combined with a visit to the nearby Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World) monument on the equatorial line. The drive down from Quito into the warm Guayllabamba valley is itself a pleasant part of the outing.
