Rio de Janeiro's Historic City Zoo
Zoológico do Rio de Janeiro (Rio Zoo) is one of the oldest and most important zoos in Brazil, located in the Quinta da Boa Vista park in the São Cristóvão neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. Founded in 1888 — the same year Brazil abolished slavery — the zoo is housed in the former imperial estate of the Brazilian royal family, giving it one of the most historically significant settings of any zoo in South America.
Imperial Heritage
The zoo occupies the grounds of the Quinta da Boa Vista, the grand estate that served as the main residence of the Brazilian imperial family from the 1840s until the fall of the empire in 1889. The main palace building, an elegant neoclassical structure, still stands in the park and now houses the Museu Nacional do Brasil. Visiting the zoo thus means walking through genuine Brazilian imperial history.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses over 2,000 animals representing more than 350 species, with strong collections across all major groups:
- Jaguars and pumas — Brazil's native big cats in spacious habitats
- Giant anteaters, tapirs, and giant armadillos
- Maned wolves and bush dogs — canids of the Brazilian interior
- Primates — over 20 species including muriquis, spider monkeys, and golden lion tamarins
- Golden lion tamarins — one of Brazil's most iconic endangered species, endemic to Rio state
- Reptiles — anacondas, caimans, and a comprehensive serpentarium
- Birds — toucans, macaws, harpy eagles, and a large free-flight aviary
Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation
Rio Zoo plays a critical role in the conservation of the golden lion tamarin — a brilliantly orange-furred primate found only in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state. The zoo collaborates with the Golden Lion Tamarin Association on one of the most celebrated conservation success stories in the world, with captive-bred animals released into protected Atlantic Forest fragments.
A Carioca Classic
For Cariocas, the Rio Zoo and Quinta da Boa Vista park are deeply embedded in the city's cultural identity. The park is particularly animated on weekends, when families from the working-class Zona Norte flock to the shaded grounds. Combined with the National Museum and the park itself, a day at Quinta da Boa Vista remains one of Rio's great classic outings.
