San José's Urban Wildlife Park

Parque Zoológico Simón Bolívar is Costa Rica's oldest zoo, located in the heart of San José in the Barrio Amón district. Founded in 1916, it is one of the longest-running zoological institutions in all of Central America, woven into the cultural fabric of the Costa Rican capital.

  • Tapirs – the country's largest land mammal
  • Spider monkeys and white-faced capuchins – primates native to Costa Rican forests
  • Scarlet macaws and toucans – emblematic birds of the tropics
  • Crocodiles and caimans – found in Costa Rican rivers and wetlands

Ideal for City Visitors

For travellers spending time in San José, the Simón Bolívar Zoo offers an excellent half-day activity. Its central location means it is easily reachable on foot from most hotels in the Barrio Amón and downtown San José area.
