The world's highest-altitude zoo at 3,400 metres in La Paz, specialising in Andean wildlife including condors, pumas, and vicuñas.
The World's Highest-Altitude Zoo
Zoológico Vesty Pakos holds a remarkable distinction: it is the highest-altitude zoo in the world, located in La Paz, Bolivia, at an elevation of approximately 3,400 metres above sea level. Situated in the Valle de Aranjuez district, the zoo was founded in 1972 and named after the Bolivian naturalist Vesty Pakos Canqui, a pioneer of wildlife conservation in Bolivia.
Record-Breaking Altitude
At 3,400 metres, the thin air and cool temperatures of the La Paz altiplano create an extraordinary environment — both for the animals and for visitors. The zoo has adapted its animal collection to species that thrive at altitude, and seeing creatures like pumas and condors at this elevation, with the dramatic Bolivian Andes as backdrop, is an experience unlike any other zoo in the world.
Andean Wildlife Focus
The zoo specialises in Andean and Bolivian species, making it a showcase of South America's high-altitude biodiversity:
- Andean condors — the world's largest flying bird, found naturally in the Bolivian Andes
- Pumas — Bolivia's highland apex predator
- Spectacled bears — South America's only bear, found in the Bolivian yungas cloud forests
- Vicuñas and guanacos — wild South American camelids of the altiplano
- Andean deer (taruca) — Bolivia's highland deer
- Llamas and alpacas — domesticated Andean camelids central to Bolivian culture
- Andean foxes and viscachas — small mammals of the Bolivian highlands
- Flamingos — three species breed at altitude on Bolivia's salt lakes
Bolivian Conservation
The zoo is closely associated with Bolivian wildlife conservation efforts, particularly for the condor and spectacled bear. It serves as a rescue and rehabilitation centre for wildlife confiscated from illegal trafficking — a significant problem in Bolivia.
A La Paz Institution
For Paceños (residents of La Paz), the Vesty Pakos zoo is a beloved weekend destination. Its combination of native Andean wildlife, dramatic highland scenery, and manageable scale makes it an ideal half-day family outing in one of the world's most extraordinary capital cities.
