One of the largest zoos in Latin America by land area, located in the highland forests near Toluca in the State of Mexico.
The State of Mexico's Vast Wildlife Park
Zoológico de Zacango is one of the largest zoos in Mexico and in all of Latin America by land area, located in the municipality of Calimaya in the State of Mexico, approximately 15 kilometres south of Toluca. Set across a vast forested landscape at an altitude of over 2,600 metres above sea level, Zacango offers a genuinely unusual zoo experience — its temperate highland climate gives it a character quite unlike the tropical zoos of southern Mexico.
Scale & Setting
The zoo covers an extensive area of pine and oak forest, with animal enclosures integrated into the natural woodland. Visitors travel through the park partly on foot and partly aboard a tourist train that tours the larger animal zones. The cooler highland climate makes it particularly comfortable for both visitors and cold-adapted animal species.
Animal Collection
Zacango houses a broad range of species across several themed zones:
- African savannah – elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, and white rhinos
- Asian species – tigers, Asiatic bears, and red pandas
- Polar and sub-polar zone – polar bears, wolves, and arctic fox — well-suited to the highland climate
- Mexican wildlife zone – jaguars, pumas, Mexican grey wolves, tapirs, and coatis
- Primate island – chimpanzees, baboons, and spider monkeys
- Bird section – flamingos, macaws, ostriches, and a walk-through aviary
Accessibility from Mexico City
Located approximately 70 kilometres southwest of Mexico City and 15 kilometres from Toluca, Zacango is within day-trip range of both cities, making it accessible to millions of residents of the Valley of Mexico. It is particularly popular with families from the State of Mexico and the southern suburbs of the capital.
A Unique Altitude Experience
The experience of visiting a zoo at over 2,600 metres elevation — surrounded by pine forest with snow-capped volcanoes visible on clear days — is genuinely distinctive. On a clear day, visitors can see Nevado de Toluca volcano from within the zoo grounds.
