Consistently ranked among the world's top 5 zoos, home to the global Przewalski's horse conservation programme. The most visited attraction in Czech Republic.
One of the World's Best Zoos
Prague Zoo (Zoologická zahrada Praha) is consistently ranked among the top five zoos in the world and is the most visited tourist attraction in the Czech Republic outside of Prague's historic city centre. Located in Troja, a scenic district on the banks of the Vltava River just north of the city, the zoo was founded in 1931 and has grown into a world-class institution covering 60 hectares of hilly, wooded terrain.
Global Rankings
Prague Zoo has been ranked the world's best zoo multiple times by prestigious travel publications including Forbes and The Guardian. Its combination of extraordinary landscape, exceptional animal collection, innovative exhibits, and outstanding conservation record sets it apart from virtually any zoo in Europe.
Spectacular Setting
The zoo is built across a dramatically hilly landscape above the Vltava River, with the baroque Troja Château visible nearby. Gondola cable cars carry visitors between the upper and lower sections of the park, and the varied terrain creates natural enclosure environments that give the zoo an unusually wild, immersive feel.
Animal Highlights
Prague Zoo houses approximately 5,000 animals across 700+ species, with a particular reputation for large mammal exhibits:
- Przewalski's horses — the last truly wild horse species; Prague Zoo leads the global conservation programme and has sent horses back to Mongolia for reintroduction
- Komodo dragons — one of the finest Komodo exhibits outside Indonesia
- Lowland gorillas — in a landmark indoor/outdoor gorilla pavilion
- Asian elephants — in a large, naturalistic elephant habitat
- Giant tortoises — Aldabra tortoises in a dedicated island habitat
- Sumatran orangutans and chimpanzees
- Polar bears and walruses — Arctic species in a spectacular aquatic exhibit
- African savannah — giraffes, zebras, and rhinos in open paddocks
Przewalski's Horse Programme
Prague Zoo's most celebrated conservation achievement is its Przewalski's horse reintroduction programme. The zoo coordinates the global studbook for this species and has successfully transported horses to Mongolia for release into the wild — directly contributing to the recovery of a species that was once extinct in nature.
