Czech Republic's second city zoo, scenically situated above the Brno Reservoir in the wooded hills of Bystrc. Known for pygmy hippo breeding success.
Moravia's Beloved Wildlife Park
Zoo Brno is the zoological garden of Brno, the capital of Moravia and the Czech Republic's second-largest city. Founded in 1953, the zoo is located in the Mniší hora hills in the Bystrc district on the western edge of Brno, set within a nature reserve overlooking the Brno Reservoir. The combination of wooded hillside terrain and waterfront views gives Zoo Brno one of the most picturesque settings of any zoo in Central Europe.
Scenic Hill & Reservoir Setting
The zoo occupies a hillside above the Brno Reservoir — a popular recreation lake that is the centrepiece of Brno's outdoor leisure scene. Many animal enclosures are positioned to take advantage of the natural terrain, and several viewpoints within the zoo offer sweeping views over the water and surrounding forest.
Animal Collection
Zoo Brno houses approximately 2,200 animals across 400+ species, with notable strength in large mammals and exotic species:
- Giraffes — the zoo's most popular residents in a large outdoor paddock
- Gorillas — western lowland gorillas in a modern indoor-outdoor habitat
- Pygmy hippos — a rare species with an active breeding programme
- Snow leopards — Central Asian mountain cats
- Orangutans — Sumatran orangutans in a spacious climbing habitat
- Jaguars and leopards
- Penguins — Humboldt penguins in an aquatic exhibit
- Rhinos — white rhinos in large outdoor paddocks
Conservation Achievements
Zoo Brno is particularly noted for its success in breeding pygmy hippos — one of Africa's most endangered large mammals. The zoo has produced numerous offspring and is considered one of the leading institutions for pygmy hippo conservation in Europe.
