One of the top-rated zoos in Mexico, located in Parque Fundidora in Monterrey, with over 2,800 animals.
One of Mexico's Finest Urban Zoos
Zoo de Monterrey (Parque Zoológico Monterrey) is widely regarded as one of the best zoos in Mexico, located in the Parque Fundidora complex in the heart of Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo León and Mexico's third-largest city. The zoo opened in 1955 and underwent a major modernisation in the 2000s that transformed it into a world-class facility.
A Zoo in an Iconic Industrial Park
The zoo is set within Parque Fundidora, a beloved urban park built on the grounds of a former steel foundry. The industrial heritage of the site gives the surrounding area a distinctive character, with historic furnace structures preserved alongside green parkland. This unique setting makes a visit to the zoo part of a broader Monterrey cultural experience.
Animal Collection
Zoo de Monterrey houses over 2,800 animals representing more than 250 species, with particularly strong collections of:
- African savannah species – lions, giraffes, zebras, and white rhinos in spacious naturalistic habitats
- Great apes – chimpanzees and gorillas in large landscaped enclosures
- Big cats – tigers, jaguars, pumas, and leopards
- Mexican wildlife – Mexican grey wolves, jaguars, ocelots, and coatis
- Aquatic species – sea lions, penguins, and an impressive freshwater fish section
- Reptile house – anacondas, giant tortoises, Nile crocodiles, and Komodo dragons
- Bird collection – flamingos, toucans, macaws, and a walk-through aviary
Modern Facilities & Family Experience
The zoo has been designed with modern visitor experience in mind, featuring wide accessible pathways, shaded rest areas, restaurants, and children's play zones. An electric train circles the zoo grounds, ideal for families with young children. The zoo consistently ranks among the most visited attractions in northern Mexico.
Conservation & Education
Zoo de Monterrey runs active conservation programmes for endangered Mexican species and hosts extensive educational programming for schools across Nuevo León. The zoo is managed by the municipality of Monterrey and remains one of the city's most cherished public institutions.
